Western Union To Take Public Works Payments In North Carolina

Date: Thursday, August 26, 2004

Public Works Commission customers will soon have more places to pay their bills.

By September, customers should be able to pay bills at 11 Western Union locations.

Western Union is only accepting cash payments and is charging $1 per transaction.

The proposed Western Union locations are Bi-Lo grocery stores at 3915 Ramsey St., 1400 Walter Reed Road and 155 Bonanza Drive in Fayetteville, and 333 W. Main St. in Hope Mills; Friendly Check store locations at 101 N. Eastern Blvd., Ramsey Street and 120 Rowan St.; the IGA Foodliner at 2495 Hope Mills Road in Hope Mills; the J&J Fast Mart at 5001 Bragg Blvd., the Quick Pack & Ship on Raeford Road; and the Mail Shipping & Print at 3429 Ramsey St.

Customers who pay over the Internet with Speed Pay may see the transaction fee increase.

Speed Pay has removed the cap on payments.

The cap had been $500, which kept the transaction fee at $3.95, said Dwight Miller, the utility's chief financial officer.

The cap was removed to meet Visa credit card rules, he said.

Removing the cap may result in an increased fee. The fee is based on the amount of the average transaction, he said.

There is no additional charge for customers who mail their payments, or pay by cash or check at the PWC's Robert C. Williams Business Center at 201 Hay St.

The PWC also has three pay stations that accept cash, checks and money orders.

The stations are at Eutaw Village Shopping Center, mall area, 2620 Bragg Blvd.; the Cliffdale Recreation Center, 6404 Cliffdale Road; and the Bordeaux Drug Store, 1758 Owen Drive.
